StepWise 360: Tailoring for Complex Needs equips you with advanced skills to tailor forensic interviews to individuals of all ages with diverse physical, psychological, or behavioural needs.

Delivery Options

In-Person: Experience hands-on training in a collaborative, real-world environment.

Duration

This 4-day workshop will take place from June 17 to 20, 2025, from 08:30 to 16:30 Pacific Standard Time.

The location of the workshop is 32355 Veterans Way, Abbotsford, BC V2T 0B3, Canada.

This is the UFV campus under the city library. Entry is through the Friendship Garden on George Ferguson Way.

Best Suited For

Police, social workers, psychologists, child or adult welfare workers, lawyers, and other professionals who work with people of all ages with complex needs.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

Define and identify complex needs and their impact on forensic interviews.
Assess and mitigate potential biases when working with people with complex needs.
Differentiate between symptoms and diagnoses to tailor interviews to each individual’s unique challenges, rather than relying on diagnostic labels.
Apply strength-based interviewing techniques that leverage an interviewee’s existing skills and resilience to foster a supportive and productive interview environment.
Tailor your interviews to accommodate various impairments (e.g., visual, hearing, verbal) and behavioral challenges (e.g., sexualized or disruptive behavior).
Adapt interviewing strategies for individuals with developmental delays, attention deficits, social deficits, and social anxiety.
Manage emotional and psychological challenges (e.g., psychosis, confusion) using empathetic and responsive communication techniques.
