StepWise 360: Interviewing Trauma Survivors (ITS) equips you with advanced skills to conduct sensitive, client-centered, trauma-informed, strength-based interviews of victims or witnesses impacted by trauma, with special focus on sexual assault survivors.

It is suitable for police, social workers, child protection specialists, lawyers, correctional staff, mental health professionals, HR specialists, and others who interview trauma survivors of all ages.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

 

  1. Recognize and mitigate common rape myths and address your biases.
  2. Explain how trauma impacts survivors and their memory—both during the incident and throughout the investigation.
  3. Develop interview plans that are client-centered, strength-based, culturally agile, and trauma-informed.
  4. Describe the difference between memory-based interviewing and trauma-informed memory-based interviewing, and adapt your approach accordingly.
  5. Understand why some interviewees may be reluctant to disclose or participate, and respond effectively to these situations.
  6. Collect information from trauma survivors in a reliable, efficient, and respectful manner using the StepWise 360.
  7. Avoid common practice traps, including legal issues, problematic questions, and victim-blaming.
  8. Use consistent self-evaluation and peer reviews to improve your interviewing skills and support your team’s growth.
